Yōkai take many different shapes
they’re creatures living in borderlands,
outskirts of town, a hill between villages
they come out at sunset, when ordinary things
and familiar faces appear strange
spirits, imps
they live under bridges, in tunnels, alleys and corners
their element is a story in which the laws of nature do not always apply
they creep into the gaps of true stories,
appear out of nowhere, exist in countless versions
they’re a mysterious noise, glimmer,
the feeling that you’re being watched.
